Songs of Refuge and Exile

A song recital featuring Charlotte Newstead and Stefan Hofkes. Including songs by Schumann, Wolf, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and a new work by Philip Lancaster and Euan Tait. Free entry.
Charlotte Newstead is a soprano, based in the South West of England where she is well established as one of the most sought-after singers of the region. She is actively involved in promoting and performing new works by living composers including David Bednall, Raymond Warren, Geoff Poole, Jonathan Bielby, Jolyon Laycock and Lyn Lloyd-Jones and has recently given the world-premiere performance, in Brussels, of Alan Charlton’s new song cycle, The Cloud.
Stefan Hofkes was born in The Netherlands, where he studied piano and conducting at the Utrecht Conservatoire. Under his prominent teachers, Alan Weiss and Alexander Warenberg, he concluded his studies with the coveted solo-recital diploma. He furthered his conducting studies at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, with Christopher Seaman, winning the Ricordi Conducting Prize in 1996.
As conductor and pianist he has collaborated with a wide variety of prominent Dutch and international soloists like David Pyatt, Ashley Wass, Michel Letiec and Vladimir Mendelssohn; and on the lighter front of classical music with Dutch pianist Louis Van Dijk and flautist Thijs Van Leer. At present Stefan combines the Musical Directorship of Reading Symphony Orchestra and Bristol Concert Orchestra with engagements throughout Europe. He is also Artistic Director of the annual “Opera!!” Festival at Beauforthuis in The Netherlands.
